Undeterred by the blazing sun and high humidity of a mid-August afternoon in Biloxi, Mississippi, Tuat Nguyen and Bien Do moved nimbly around their shrimp boat, making last-minute preparations to leave for Lake Borgne, where the Louisiana shrimp season would open in a few days.

Biloxi, Mississippi – 89 people filled a small room at the Chua Van Duc Buddhist Temple on Oak St. in Biloxi on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 18th, for a community meeting held by Asian Americans for Change (AAC). AAC, a local organization, held the event to introduce other local organizations to the Vietnamese community.

An annual Asian heritage festival, hosted by Mississippi youth, is now extending into an ongoing effort to support fishing families impacted by the BP oil disaster. 

In October, the Vietnamese youth group Gulf Coast REACH hosted the 4th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in downtown Biloxi, Mississippi.  The festival was intended to be a “Day of Respite and Spirit” for those affected by the oil disaster.
