opprc rallyOn November 29th, a coalition of over 30 local organizations delivered a petition with more than 2,200 signatures to Mayor Mitch Landrieu, calling for reform of Orleans Parish Prison.  Specifically, the petition demanded that the Mayor formally commit to capping the size of the new facility being built by the Sheriff’s Office at 1,438 beds, and that the City Council end the “per diem” budget system for the jail.

We who believe in freedom CANNOT REST!! The loss of Troy Davis is a living testimony that we must continue the conversation about the Justice System; From the ways people enter, the inhuman conditions that PEOPLE go through while they are in jail, and the way people exit and re-enter society. Let's mourn but do not give up. Know that the battle may be lost but the war has just begun.

Let us Pray: Oh Divine Creator of the Heavens and the Earths, hear our pray that NO ONE ELSE is killed by this horrendous Death Penalty.  St. Francis - Pray for us.

Drive down this short stretch of St. Bernard Avenue, and you will see signs of a struggling neighborhood in despair. Bars, blighted homes, metal-grated storefronts, and the still-shuttered Circle Food Store tell the story of this strip.  Here in New Orleans’ 7th ward, hope and sustenance have been drained by Katrina’s floodwaters, and by decades of racism’s insidious trend of sapping vital resources from a community.
