By Jose Cardenas.Biloxi, Mississippi – 89 people filled a small room at the Chua Van Duc Buddhist Temple on Oak St. in Biloxi on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 18th, for a community meeting held by Asian Americans for Change (AAC). AAC, a local organization, held the event to introduce other local organizations to the Vietnamese community.
After the BP oil disaster, Thao Chi Nguyen worked with Asian Americans for Change (AAC) to provide services and advocate for Asian American fishing communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Finding himself working as both a teacher and translator in a Heating, Ventilating and Air-conditioning Installation and Repair (HVAC) program was a surprise for Duc Nguyen. An experienced HVAC professional, he said, “I have always been a very hands-on type, and I never really liked the classroom. I have learned to appreciate the importance of the time spent there since teaching this class.”
