There is a moment between intending to change and actually making a change that is as large and silent as the far reaches of the universal plains. For some, it is a split second. For others it is years. For the collective conscience, it may be several lifetimes.
How easy it is for us to think that we are separate from each other, that who we are as a people is not entirely dependent upon who we are as an individual, and vise versa.
The number one question everyone has asked me since my walk to Washington D.C. is, “How are your feet?” They are fairly good. Although I do still get the “hikers wobble,” usually early in the morning or if I sit too long.
Today, I return to the Gulf Coast after my 1,243 mile walk to Washington. I walked to call for action from President Obama and Congress to end the BP disaster. And at the end of my walk, I met 10,000 energized, fired up youth who are organizing for a clean energy future, at the Power Shift 2011 youth climate summit.
This week, I've come to Washington, D.C. from the Gulf Coast. Thirty-four days and 1,243 miles ago, I set off on foot from New Orleans, Louisiana. I've faced tornadoes, rainstorms, heat exhaustion and countless blisters. But here I am, and I walked the whole way.
Well, the walk is well under way and I have been wanting to write to you all and tell you the wonderful things that have been happening, as well as the discouraging things I have learned. Until now I just have been too pooped to pop.
First thing is that I have seen some wonderous and amazing things. We have a beautiful country.
As you know, on March 12, in Westwego, LA at the Farmers Market we will be hosting an event in which we hope to honor those who have been working in the Gulf on behalf of the people and environment, with booths available for people to obtain information and get help with needs surrounding the spill and to join in fellowship surrounding some great music. You will find the link to that event here.
There will soon be a series of meetings with congressional leaders by a delegation of Gulf Coast citizens concerning the affects now being experienced in the Gulf of Mexico with regards to the 2010 Gulf Oil Catastrophe.
We ask that all interested and compassionate people, on and beyond the Gulf Coast, please submit a one page letter regarding their personal experiences with this event, as well as possible solutions and/or demands in relation to it.

In a few short weeks the public view will, without doubt, fall back upon the coast and her people. We must take clear and insurmountable advantage of this. We must decide that this will be our stand.
